Russia has officially informed UN Secretary-General António Guterres about the suspension of the agreement on grain exports from Ukraine. Because of drone attacks on Russian ships from the Black Sea protected corridor, Russia “cannot guarantee the safety of civilian ships traveling within the framework of the above-mentioned initiative,” writes Russian Ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebensia Guterres. Moscow is suspending the July agreement “indefinitely” because of the attacks. Appropriate instructions have been given to the Russian representatives in the joint coordination center in Istanbul, which is responsible for the implementation of the initiative. In addition, Russia is requesting a meeting of the UN Security Council for Monday on the matter, according to sources in the most powerful body in the United Nations.

Because of the new blockade of grain exports by Moscow, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj is calling for Russia to be expelled from the G20. Zelenskyy is reacting to the Russian decision to suspend the agreement on grain exports via Ukrainian Black Sea ports. “Algeria, Egypt, Yemen, Bangladesh, Vietnam – these and other countries could suffer from a further aggravation of the food crisis that Russia is deliberately provoking,” says Zelenskyj in his evening video address. Since September, Russia has been delaying the inspections of ships before crossing the Bosphorus, which are carried out jointly with the UN, Turkey and Ukraine. There, 176 ships with around two million tons of grain were stuck in traffic.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for a sharp reaction from the United Nations and the G20 countries to Russia’s suspension of the grain agreement. Indonesia currently holds the rotating presidency of the 20 leading industrialized and emerging countries (G20). In addition to several Western countries, the group also includes Russia and China.
