Is Vladimir Putin unstoppable? While the economic sanctions do not seem to stop the progress of Russian forces in Ukraine, at the gates of the capital Kiev, Jean-Louis Bourlanges, the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee at the National Assembly, estimated on Europe 1 that “anti-personnel sanctions” would be more effective. The objective is to financially target Vladimir Putin, his entourage, or the Russian oligarchs. “And I think we have to go very far,” added the MoDem deputy on the show Europe Morning Friday.

Seize the assets of Russian oligarchs

If he is not “at the discussion table” in the Ukrainian file, Jean-Louis Bourlanges explained that it was necessary “for example, to take the splendid villas of the oligarchs, the capital, the travel capacities… The properties of all these people must be taken.” A similar position, among others, to that of the socialist Raphaël Glucksmann.

At the microphone of Lionel Gougelot, Jean-Louis Bourlanges was also surprised “that there is a kind of immunity granted to the supreme leader. In a good trial, we do not punish the accomplices more severely than the main author.” While he stressed that all of this “should be discussed”, the MoDem deputy referred to “a fairly great difficulty (of the international community) to agree fully on the detail, given the fallout. “

“Necessary penalties”

“Sanctions are necessary because there is no reason not to punish criminals”, added Jean-Louis Bourlanges on Europe 1, qualifying however that “we do not stop a war with sanctions. I am unable to detail sanctions good or bad (…), but they are certainly an ambivalent weapon because our economies are deeply interdependent.”

“Sanctions must be made, they must be severe,” he continued, emphasizing their anti-personnel nature. “In the long term, we must do everything to reverse the balance of power. We have the means”, indicates Jean-Louis Bourlanges. “We have a GDP eight times greater than that of Russia, we have intelligence, technology, innovation… You just have to want to mobilize.”
