Ukrainian authorities order evacuations of civilians in the Kherson region

  • Ukraine finally denied Thursday having captured the village of Andriïvka, near Bakhmut, on the eastern front from Russian forces, after having assured that it had regained control.on one of the axes of its difficult counter-offensive. “Andriïvka is ours”congratulated herself on Telegram Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar, before being contradicted by a Ukrainian assault unit on the ground and modifying her publication.
  • The Ukrainian army has been leading a slow counter-offensive since the beginning of June intended to push back Russian forces in the East and South, but it faces powerful defensive lines made of trenches, minefields and anti-tank traps. So far, this operation has enabled the recovery of a handful of villages. But the Ukrainian push has intensified in recent weeks, particularly on the southern front with the capture of the village of Robotyne, towards the town of Tokmak, an important logistical point for Russian forces.
  • “The Kherson Regional Defense Council decided to make it obligatory to evacuate families with children from localities subject to constant enemy fire”announced Thursday evening on Telegram Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the military administration of the region. Kherson, in the south of the country, which is partly controlled by Russian forces, is regularly targeted by bombings.
  • Ukrainian pilots successfully completed initial training on Gripen fighter jets conducted by Swedish Defense, the latter announced Thursday. If Sweden has not yet decided to deliver these planes to Ukraine, it is not closing the door to this possibility.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin “gratefully accepted Kim Jong-un’s invitation to visit North Korea”, declared Dmitri Peskov, the spokesperson for the Russian presidency. The North Korean leader has been visiting Russia since Tuesday.
  • Washington expressed concern on Wednesday about a possible military agreement between Moscow and Pyongyang. The Biden administration “will not hesitate” to impose additional sanctions on Russia and North Korea, according to the US State Department. Japan, for its part, highlighted on Thursday a risk of ” breach “ United Nations sanctions on North Korea’s arms.
  • According to information from the official Belarusian press agency Belta, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko will travel to Russia for discussions on Friday with his Russian counterpart.
  • The European Parliament described the Belarusian president as ” partner in crime “ of Russia in the war “unjustified, illegal and unprovoked” carried out against Ukraine, in a resolution adopted Wednesday. He asked the International Criminal Court to issue an international arrest warrant against Mr Lukashenko.
