Ukrainian hackers have managed to disrupt the distribution of vodka within the Russian army by hacking into an online portal.

It is not a myth that vodka is an alcohol particularly appreciated by Kremlin soldiers. So, in the context of the invasion of their country by the Russian neighbour, the Ukrainian hackers decided to deprive the enemy forces as much as possible of their precious grain brandy, all without physical violence.

Russian alcoholic drinks distribution portal targeted by DDoS attacks

To disrupt the distribution of vodka, Ukrainian hackers have launched various DDoS (denial of service) attacks, attacks which consist of launching false requests on a site or an infrastructure, using numerous computers or connected objects, to slow down strongly or outright bring down said site or infrastructure, drowning legitimate requests in the mass, depriving them of access to the network.

Here, hackers focused their attacks on a strategic EGAIS portal, commonly used by the Russian government to ensure and coordinate the distribution of alcoholic beverages in the field. Several producers and distributors of vodka would thus have the greatest difficulty in accessing the famous portal.

DDoS attacks have had the effect of severely disrupting the transport and supply of alcoholic beverages throughout Russia in recent days. The first attacks would have been carried out, according to Russian media like Vedomostion May 2 and 3, after the publication of a message calling for a collective hack against the servers of the portal.

The Ukrainian cyber army does not relax its efforts

DDoS attacks have disrupted the system so much that several factories were forced to completely halt shipments last week, effectively slowing production, to avoid cramming too much product that could not be delivered.

At the end of last week, the EGAIS portal still did not seem to be functioning normally, which attests to a large number of attacks. Bleeping Computer has in any case been able to notice that the members of the IT Army, this group constituting the Ukrainian computer army, had added the Russian distribution portal EGAIS as a target to attack.

This army, now made up of amateur hackers from all over the world supporting the Ukrainian forces, has even been legitimized by kyiv since February. In March, Russia had already suffered a severe disruption of its meat distribution network, after a computer attack.
