Desmoke cones line the horizon and mingle with the clouds above Soledar, less than ten kilometers from Bakhmout in eastern Ukraine. Through binoculars, we can make out the silhouettes of five-storey buildings that the bombs have transformed into piles of rubble, but a few lacerated facades are still standing.

All around the city, which had a population of 10,490 in January 2022, a thin layer of snow covers the ruins and the frozen ground of the trenches. But what is this hill worth, where only a few hundred civilians live in their cellars and where corpses are piling up?

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has promised he will send necessary reinforcements and weapons to keep Soledar in Ukrainian hands, as Moscow claims…
