London-based brand Nothing has just unveiled its latest wireless earphones, the Nothing Ear (open). The idea is to offer models that go around the ear without obstructing the ear canal, to remain aware of one’s surroundings. Here are all the details.
Today, the market for Open-type headphones is expanding. Indeed, after the launch of the Shokz OpenFit Air, Xiaomi OpenWear Stereo, Huawei FreeClip or Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, it is the turn of the Nothing brand to offer the Ear (open). With a completely different approach than the Ear or Ear (a) of traditional in-ear headphones, these are distinguished by their open design, a first for the brand founded by Carl Pei.
An open design for a unique sound experience
The open-ear design of the Nothing Ear (open) is based on a particular acoustic architecture. Indeed, like other models of the same kind, the earphones are not inserted into the ear canal but rest at the entrance of the ear. This configuration allows the sound to diffuse naturally, while letting ambient noise pass through. It is mainly aimed at athletes and not at music lovers who are keen to enjoy high audio quality, which despite relatively advanced technology is not the case here.

The headphones are installed on the ear. They are lightweight: 8.1 grams and have a 3-point balance system with a silicone surround. The stem incorporates a flexible memory nickel-titanium alloy wire.

Like the other products of the brand, the headphones but also the case adopt a compact, refined and transparent design. The latter integrates an LED to indicate the battery level and can be recharged via USB-C.

For the sound, Nothing has integrated a 14.2 mm diameter dynamic speaker with a titanium diaphragm. According to the brand, we can count on a bass reinforcement function as well as access, via the associated application, to a 5-band adjustment possibility. The headphones are equipped with the Sound Seal system which aims to minimize sound leaks so that people who are close to you do not hear the music or your interlocutor if you are on a call.

The Nothing Ear (open) integrates a multipoint Bluetooth 5.3 connection allowing easy switching between multiple devices. The supported codecs are AAC and SBC, the minimum. You can also count on the Google Fast Pair function for instant pairing. Music control is done by pressing on the headphones. They are officially IP54 certified, so they can withstand rain and sweat, making them suitable for sports sessions, for example.
In addition, they feature a dual microphone with AI voice optimization (AI Clear Voice Technology 3.0) to attenuate wind and high-frequency noise. Echoes are also processed, providing, according to the brand, particularly clear and intelligible calls. A low latency mode is possible.

Battery life: up to 30 hours of listening time
The Nothing Ear (open) has a claimed battery life of 8 hours of continuous listening, which is a decent figure for headphones in this category. The included charging case extends this to a total of 30 hours (compared to 38.5 hours for the Xiaomi OpenWear Stereo models, for example). Fast charging is also included, with 10 minutes of charging providing up to 2 additional hours of listening.
An application with integrated ChatGPT for the brand’s mobiles
Like the other headphones of the brand, this model offers the integration of ChatGPT with the possibility of displaying widgets on the screen of the smartphone (exclusively those of the Nothing brand) for a quick search. Voice control is possible as well as the configuration of the headphones via the Nothing X application. Note that it is possible to customize the touch controls (including the volume adjustment), to access an equalizer and to launch a search for the headphones in case of loss.
Availability and price of Nothing Ear (open) headphones
The new Nothing Ear (open) headphones will be available for pre-order from September 25th and will be available on October 1st at a price of 149 euros. They are only available in white.
