GENEVA, September 26 (Reuters) – Countries are calling for a debate at the UN Human Rights Council to discuss China’s treatment of Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in the Xinjiang region , in the far west of the country, shows a document consulted on Monday.
The “draft resolution” aims to launch a debate at the next session of the Council, which begins in February. Diplomats told Reuters that the United States and the United Kingdom were among his supporters.
A UN report published last month states that “serious human rights violations may have been committed” in Xinjiang, and may amount to crimes against humanity.
China vigorously denies any abuse and has denounced a “farce” orchestrated by the United States and Western countries, which is based on false information and a presumption of guilt. (Report Emma Farge, French version Alizée Degorce, edited by Kate Entringer)
