UN women’s organization pledges support to Iranian women

Women should be allowed to protest unjustly without being subjected to reprisals, the UN women’s organization wrote in a statement. She called on the Iranian authorities to conduct an independent, impartial and prompt investigation into Masha Amini’s death and to hold the perpetrators accountable.

The UN women’s organization “UN Women” has pledged its support to women in Iran after the violent crackdown on protesters by security forces. “We call on the competent authorities to support and enable the exercise of full human rights in a safe environment without fear of violence, prosecution or persecution,” said a statement published on Wednesday night. The women should be allowed to protest unjustly without being subjected to reprisals. They have the right to physical autonomy, which also includes their choice of clothing.

According to Iranian state media, more than 40 people have been killed in the protests in Iran that have been going on for around a week and a half. However, observers fear a much higher number of victims. The protests were triggered by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. She was arrested by the Morality Police for violating the strict Islamic dress code and died on September 16 under unclear circumstances. The demonstrators speak of police violence, which the authorities firmly reject. The German Bundestag wants to debate the nationwide protests in Iran in a current hour this Wednesday.

The UN women’s organization called on the Iranian authorities to investigate Amini’s death independently, impartially and without delay. The results of the investigation would have to be made public and the perpetrators held accountable.
