unbearable images of the "worst breeding" that the association had never seen before

The association unveils a breeding of male ducks, which is reaching "heights in horror."

In the southwest of France, the daily life of a duck farm is a real nightmare on earth. Thursday, August 20, the L214 association, which protects and defends animals, published a video of their latest investigation showing these poor ducks destined for the foie gras industry. In a sad state: one on top of the other in an unsanitary room, maggots and rats as neighbors, decaying dead animals …

More precisely located in Lichos in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, the breeding supplies male ducks to breeders in the foie gras sector.

In 2019, L214 already denounced this sector of activity with a massive slaughter of ducklings in the Dordogne.

“In 15 years of fieldwork, I have never seen a situation like this! Ducks“ survive amid dozens of rotting corpses, maggots, rats and other insects. And the smell! Unbearable… ”, declares Sébastien Arsac, spokesperson for L214.

L214 reports that only 1% of animal farms are inspected per year, a figure that unfortunately does not increase from year to year.

A “health bomb” according to him, who sees a situation “totally out of control”. The association therefore decided to file a complaint with the court of Pau for serious abuse, cruelty to animals and abandonment. The goal: to shut down the operation, but also to highlight the lack of control of the state services.

Julien Denormandie, Minister of Agriculture, on Thursday morning asked the Prefecture of Pyrénées-Atlantiques for a "formal notice", which could go as far as "suspension of activity". "The Minister of Agriculture and Food has asked the prefecture to conduct a full investigation of the state of the farm," said a statement.

"From August 20 in the morning, a veterinarian will be on site to examine in detail the condition of the animals and take the necessary protective measures. The minister asked the prefecture for a formal notice of the operation, which may lead to a suspension of activity. (…) We are increasing the checks to protect animals and take strict measures so that precisely these unacceptable drifts, but isolated and individual, do not discredit an entire profession to which I assure my support and my confidence ”, he adds.

"Animal suffering, health risks, damage to the environment, deplorable working conditions for the employees, this farm must absolutely close urgently and definitively. Together we can achieve it.", We can read on the site from L214.
