Since 2007, fans have been able to relive the adventures of Nathan Drake and friends like Sully or Elena Fisher on PlayStation consoles. In 2016, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End appeared to mark the end of the main series and Nathan Drake’s story. In spite of the tearful ending, there are now new clues “Uncharted 5“ there?
Everything has an end – and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End gives a strong impression that the Uncharted series has come to that end. But a hint makes fan hearts beat faster and hope that a new game of “Uncharted” will appear after all. The LinkedIn CV of Josh Scherr, who works as a writer and narrative designer at Naughty Dog, provides the clue. For a little over two years he has been working on an as yet unnamed project. The job description suggests that this is a game that will have a big focus on the narrative, what a more seriouss project could stand.

Is Uncharted 5 coming?
Naughty Dog has confirmed that they are currently working on three projects. Two of these projects belong to the “The Last of Us” series: namely a remake of the first part and a standalone multiplayer game. Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann confirmed at the Summer Game Fest that a third project is in the works. He joked that he could present the game on site if he got permission to do so. This indicates that it is a sequel to an already well-known title. Even if Naughty Dog is a well-known studio, this limits the selection enormously.
In addition, this game is said to have been in development for more than two years, which also indicates a larger project. Last but not least, Kurt Margenau also announced on his Twitter channelthat he is currently working as game director on an as yet undisclosed project for Naughty Dog. He canceled the project with “***********”. The number of stars here coincides exactly with the title “Uncharted 5”.
When asked in January whether a concrete sequel to “Uncharted” is planned, Naughty Dog already answered as follows:
- “I think it’s safe to say that we can never say never. Yes, Uncharted is a franchise that we love – that the studio loves. It’s a world we want to see more of. So I can certainly say that.”
Even if this statement is not a confirmation of an “Uncharted 5”, it can be interpreted that the door to possible sequels is still open and even great interest.

Will Uncharted 5 destroy the end of the fourth part?
A potential “Uncharted 5” splits the fan community: many fans fear that a fifth part could destroy the harmonious ending and dramaturgy of “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End”. The fourth part finally jumps into the future and shows the characters Nathan and Elena happily married with a teenage daughter. In addition, the plot of the fourth part already addresses the fact that Nathan Drake for one last mission returns from retirement. Many fans fear that an “Uncharted 5” would overshadow this happy ending. At the same time, Nathan Drake has been the face of the series almost continuously up to this point, which is why another protagonist is unthinkable for many fans.
Uncharted 5 without Nathan Drake?
The latest game “Uncharted: The Lost Legacy” proves that the series also works without Nathan Drake. The events of this game take place after Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, where Nathan Drake is already retired located. The main character of this sequel is Chloe Frazer, who previously appeared in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and became a true fan favorite. She is accompanied by Nadine Ross, who appeared as the second antagonist in Uncharted 4 and also becomes a fan favorite in Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Also Nathan’s brother Sam Drakewho plays a central role in the fourth part, appears as a supporting character.
Furthermore, fans rumor whether the daughter of Nathan and Elena, who is playable in the epilogue of “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End” and here also shows a clear affinity for travel and adventure, could not possibly follow in her father’s footsteps. That would fit especially since family is a central theme in the fourth part. So even if an Uncharted 5 were to come out, Nathan Drake wouldn’t have to come back from retirement (again). At the same time, fans wouldn’t have to worry about us getting a brand new protagonist either. While the character Nathan Drake has long been the face of the Uncharted series, there are many interesting and popular supporting characters in the Uncharted universe who could follow in his footsteps.
