Released in 2016, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End came to end the adventures of Nathan Drake. A story that then ended with The Lost Legacy, a standalone centered on Chloé Frazer. If the games around Nathan are indeed over, Sony and Naughty Dog have already shown some enthusiasm for the return of the franchise, and this, on several occasions. Last January, the studio had expressed its desire to continue the license which is particularly close to their hearts. And if the hypothetical Uncharted 5 was a reboot of the saga?
The eternal remake syndrome
Definitely, Sony loves to relaunch its licenses rather than developing new components. The output of The Last of Us Part I had already stunned the community, which did not see the real need to release the remake of a game that had not yet blown its tenth anniversary candle. This does not seem to stop the Japanese manufacturer since it is rumored – in a very credible way – that a remaster or remake of Horizon Zero Dawn on PS5 is on track. So when we are told thatUncharted may be entitled to its reboot, we blow, but we could almost believe it.
Before continuing, you should know that this is a rumor and that nothing is official. We will also come back to the potential credibility of this one a little further down. The site assures us that it has two trusted sources who have said that Sony decided to reboot the series at the beginning of the year and to entrust this project to an unknown developer.
This reboot would not be developed by Naughty Dog but not another team, although the latter would still help the devs on it. Theleak.co also adds that the development is still in its infancy and that the release should not be done for a long time, although a small teaser could be done soon. Rumors that it is absolutely necessary to calm down
However, before believing in a potential return ofUncharted in the form of a reboot, it is absolutely necessary to measure this rumor. Usually, we almost never relay rumors, except when they come from reputable journalists and insiders, who have already proven their credibility on several occasions. Theleak.co, despite its flashy name, doesn’t yet have any credentials as a reliable source of video game leaks..
If we tell you about it, it is above all to warn you and properly measure the veracity of this information, already repeated everywhere without using the conditional : the site mentioned has yet to prove itself. Nevertheless, some additional information can broaden the tweezers: Tom Henderson, insider who has proven on many occasions that we can trust him, relayed the information, without confirming the facts.
But that is obviously not enough, even less to constitute a “track record”, in other words a set of rumors and verified leaks which would prove the credibility of the site. And even though it was founded by Staffan Ulmert, editor-in-chief, who is also the founder of Has it Leaked, a site launched in 2012 and known in the music field for numerous album leaks (leaking an album, a film or other, that’s before everything from hacking, which is not the same as the work of an insider). Although this site has been repeated several times over the past decade in very serious newspapers, from BBC World to the New York Times, on the gaming side, he hasn’t proven anything yet.
Suffice to say it suits you warn against such rumors from sources whose reliability can hardly be traced. The fact that Henderson, who for his part has proven his reliability on numerous occasions, relays the information does not give him immediate credibility. Uncharted, towards a return to reboot?
So why talk about it? First, to tell you to be careful not to take this rumor for granted, but also because the case of the Uncharted series has been the subject of many rumors in recent years.
Of course, the context is also very important. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End awas going to celebrate last year the 37 million players, an impressive statistic which shows that the license still has some in the belly. The recent film adaptation shows this well, as does the remastered compilation released on PC and consoles earlier in the year.
This is not the first time that we have heard of a return to the license: at the end of 2018, a game project Uncharted had been spotted near the Sony San Diego studio. Then, in April 2021, we learned that Bend Studio (Days Gone) had been working on a new Uncharted, before he was removed from the project. More recently (and above all, in a more concrete way), we learned that Naughty Dog had approached PlayStation Visual Arts (which took care of The Last of Us Part I) to work on a new collaborative project. A rapprochement that puts us strongly on the trail of a remake.
With a little simulation, it is more than possible that a new game Uncharted either in preparation as the will to relaunch the series is there. It remains to be seen whether this will take the form of a reboot. Like always, take this rumor with a grain of salt, while waiting for this to be officially confirmed (or for the site to prove to us that it is really trustworthy). To see also if it is a real reboot with a complete change of direction, as evoked by the noise of the corridor or if it is not a bad interpretation of the term and that it will be a “simple” remake. Anyway, with Sony, we wouldn’t be surprised to have yet another project of this caliber, but if we believe it, it’s more for the previous echoes of serious journalists rather than following this rumor of the day.
