Faeser announces harshness against clans

A shootout in Duisburg between Hells Angels and members of a clan shocks the public. Federal Minister of the Interior announces a “tough response from the rule of law”. She also brings deportations into play – but their implementation is likely to be difficult.

In view of increasing violence from clans and biker gangs, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has announced tougher crackdowns. “There has been a lack of decisive action here for far too long,” said the SPD politician to “Bild am Sonntag”. She spoke of violent excesses in public, which also endangered uninvolved people massively. “That requires a tough response from the rule of law. Nobody should allow isolated parallel worlds. These highly criminal clan structures shouldn’t be allowed to continue to entrench. On the contrary: they need to be uncovered and smashed.”

The interior minister also spoke about the deportation of clan perpetrators. “But we will also ensure that criminal clan members are returned to their home countries,” said Faeser. However, clan members were often born in Germany and therefore have German citizenship or after naturalization, so that they cannot be deported.

Four people were injured, some seriously, in a shootout in Duisburg on Wednesday between the Hells Angels rocker group and a criminal Turkish-Arab clan. The shots were fired during a riot in which up to 100 people took part.
