The DFB around the managing director of sports Andreas Rettig and sports director Rudi Völler wants to extend the contract with national coach Julian Nagelsmann in the long term before the upcoming European Championships. This is what the “Kicker” reports.
According to the report, a plan is currently being drawn up under which conditions the cooperation could continue after the home European Championships. An initial exchange between the association and the national coach is said to have already taken place, in which the latter is said to have shown openness and interest. “There are two options: association and club,” said Nagelsmann, according to “Kicker,” in a discussion with fans.
The DFB apparently wants to agree on a common goal for the European Championships with Nagelsmann, after which a contract extension will take effect. It is still unclear which round the team would have to reach for this. The German Handball Federation (DHB) recently chose a similar construct. The contract extension with coach Alfred Gislason until the World Cup in Germany in 2027 only became effective with qualification for the Olympic Games in Paris this year.
Nagelsmann made a meaningful statement about his future as part of the squad announcement for the upcoming two international matches against France and the Netherlands. “It is advisable for every person to take care of their professional future. It is healthy and part of it, at 36, to think about how life will continue from a professional perspective,” said the ex-Bayern coach. “I have a contract until after the European Championships, that’s the current status, otherwise I don’t have any other paper.”
