Under the same roof: how did Dominique Farrugia get the idea for this film?

Released in cinemas in 2017, the movie called Under the same roofworn by Louise Bourgoin and Gilles Lellouchewill be broadcast on Sunday, October 9, 2022, from 9:05 p.m. on the channel TF1 film series. Realized by Dominique Farrugiathis feature film features the character of Yvan, portrayed on screen by Gilles Lellouchewho has just divorced Delphine, performed by Louise Bourgoin. While he is looking for a home, his financial situation does not allow him to find one. He then remembers that he owns 20% of his ex-wife’s home; they will therefore live in a shared apartment with their two children, respectively embodied by Kolia Abiteboul and Adèle Castillon.

The idea for this comedy germinated in Dominique Farrugia’s mind a few years earlier, when he read an article published in the daily Release. The paper in question explained that 60% of divorced couples in Paris were forced to live under the same roof due to lack of money.. The filmmaker saw in it an idea for a script, which he first put aside to devote himself to another film: Bis. He then began to develop this project, without a director in mind. “And then, after the third version of the screenplay, I said to myself: ‘why not me ?’. I spoke about it with Laurent Turner and we resumed writing together“remembered the former acolyte of Alain Chabat and Chantal Lauby within the draws.

For the record, Under the same roof echoes Dominique Farrugia’s first feature film: Delphine 1 – Yvan 0. Besides the names of the heroes, which were surely not chosen at random, the theme is again that of the separation of a couple. The main characters, camped at the time by Serge Hazanavicius and Julie Gayet, are now married, parents of two children, and in the process of divorce. “This story very quickly made me think of my characters from Delphine 1 – Yvan 0. More precisely to what Delphine and Yvan could have become twenty years later : she, a nurse, he, without a fixed job, with two children, and on the point of divorce. The idea of Delphine 1 – Yvan 0 was born from a sentence by Philippe Djian: ‘The last great human adventure is to live with a woman and make her happy’. At 33, I found it magnificent. And at 54, I’m dealing with divorce. So I don’t know if I have a very good image of the couple! (laughs) Yet I never divorced“, had explained Dominique Farrugia.
