Unemployment down 1.3% in the second quarter

The number of unemployed registered a significant drop of 1.3% in the second quarter in France (excluding Mayotte), or 50,600 fewer registered, according to figures from the Ministry of Labor released Tuesday, July 27. In total, 3.75 million people are currently unemployed (falling under category A of unemployment).

Including reduced activity (categories B and C), the number of job seekers is down 0.5% to 5.98 million people. It thus goes back below the threshold of 6 million, according to the statistics department (Dares).

Over one year, the drop in category A is 14.8%, but the number of job seekers in this category remains 200,800 higher than the level it posted before the health crisis, during the fourth quarter of 2019. On in June alone, category A fell by 2% (- 73,300 job seekers). In the second quarter, the decline in category A was greater among young people (2.1% among those under 25) than among seniors (0.3%).

Categories B and C recorded an increase in the number of registrants of around 22,000 people, or 1% more over the quarter.

“Peak” of recruitments

On the long-term unemployment front, the number of job seekers registered for a year or more has fallen by 1% in categories A, B and C. Long-term job seekers now represent 50.6% of those registered. , the 50% threshold having been crossed in January. The latest quarterly results, published at the end of April, showed a slight drop in unemployment in the first quarter (- 0.4%).

Under the effect of Covid-19, 2020 will have been marked by an increase in the number of unemployed by 7.5%, with 265,400 additional registrants in the fourth quarter of 2020 compared to the fourth quarter of 2019.

The second quarter figures confirm other favorable indicators published recently. The number of declarations of hiring of more than one month (excluding temporary work) notably increased by 16.9% in the second quarter, reaching a “Historical peak”, with more than 2.2 million hires, according to the Urssaf Caisse nationale (formerly Acoss).
