PARIS (Reuters) – The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) supports the inclusion of the Ukrainian city of Odessa on the World Heritage List, the organization said on Tuesday. UN.
Following a meeting between Ukrainian Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko and the organization’s director general, Audrey Azoulay, Unesco said it had mobilized experts so that Ukraine’s candidacy could be examined urgently by the World Heritage Committee.
Unesco has said it also wants to add Odessa to the list of World Heritage in Danger, along with World Heritage sites in Kyiv and Lviv, which are also under threat.
The city of Odessa, located on the shores of the Black Sea, is only a few tens of kilometers from the front line and has been hit several times by Russian missiles. Last month, part of the large glass roof and windows of the Museum of Fine Arts, inaugurated in 1899, were destroyed.
UNESCO will finance the repair of this museum and that of the Museum of Modern Art, as well as the recruitment of additional staff dedicated to the protection of the collections, said the organization.
