Today, as part of the Monday cinema series “Adrenaline”, ZDF is showing the action film “Unhinged” starring Russell Crowe. Much of the film is reminiscent of two other classics.

A man is stuck in traffic, almost insane. A careless honking in “Unhinged” brings out the psychopath in Russell Crowe, who has already started his killing spree. The potential next victim (Caren Pistorius) can’t know anything about it, so she doesn’t apologize for her behavior either. In this way, she and her son become the involuntary targets of the serial killer’s aggression.

The number of his victims increases in the course of the chase of the young mother. Sometimes she thinks she shook off the gunman, but then he suddenly reappears. Director Derrick Borte, who is familiar with shooting car commercials, interweaves bits and pieces of two classic films, one of which should immediately catch the eye of the neutral observer: “Falling Down” from 1993 with Michael Douglas.
“Unhinged” borrows from two classic films
While the psychopath embodied by Douglas continues his rampage on foot from the initial traffic jam situation, Russell Crowe remains behind the wheel of his car in “Unhinged” and begins a merciless chase. This aspect of the danger that is always on the neck is borrowed from the Spielberg classic “The Duel” (Eng. “Das Duel”), in which a monstrous truck is chasing a red Plymouth Valiant in front of it.
Both models are considered masterpieces of their genre in their own way. You can find out whether this can also be said of “Unhinged – Out of Control” tonight from 10.15 p.m. at the free TV premiere of the action flick as part of the ZDF Monday cinema.
