Soon a global union of the left? The Socialist Party seems to be ready for it, but must still validate the agreement reached with La France insoumise during a national council Thursday evening, which promises to be explosive. Since the announcement, Bernard Cazeneuve has already announced to leave the PS, Stéphane Le Foll wants to make a dissident campaign and Jean-Christophe Cambadélis calls to oppose the union.

The union of the left between the Insoumis, the PCF, the ecologists and the PS seems to be on the right track, but the agreement for the legislative elections must still be voted on Thursday evening in the National Council of the Socialist Party, the Parliament of the party. Internally, the criticism is strong. Bernard Cazeneuve, the former Prime Minister, has already announced to return his card, Stéphane Le Foll says he is ready to carry out a dissident campaign, while the former first secretary Jean-Christophe Cambadélis calls to refuse the union.

In addition to substantive disagreements, there is now the distribution of constituencies which crystallizes internal opposition. In the current agreement proposal, the Socialist Party would get 70. In some of its strongholds, it would disappear almost completely. In Paris, a city led by Anne Hidalgo, only two constituencies are reserved for socialist candidates.

In Occitania, region of Carole Delga, of the 49 constituencies in this region, the rose party would only have six. Even though she is the best re-elected socialist outgoing president, although she refused union with rebellious France in the second round in 2021. The situation is explosive, the national council on Thursday evening which must ratify or no the agreement, looks extremely tense.

An agreement that also divides the base

In some federations, the pill does not pass at all. Some dissenting candidates could emerge even if the agreement is ratified. This will also pose a question of conscience for many activists, very attached to what they call “the old house”, but also to their local barons. The ultimate symbol of this feeling of betrayal, a socialist points to the fact that the constituency of Jean Jaurès, in Carmaux, in the Tarn, has been reserved for a Europe Ecology-The Greens candidate.
