(CercleFinance.com) – UK retail sales contracted sharply in December, reflecting consumer concerns over the spread of the Omicron variant.
According to official data released Friday by the ONS, the national statistics institute, retail sales across the Channel fell 3.7% month-on-month in December.
The ONS points out that sales in volume of non-food products plunged by 7.1% after their sharp rise in November, the health situation having weighed on all the components of the statistics (department stores, clothing, equipment for the House).
At their current levels, however, retail sales remain 2.6% higher than in February 2020, the last month before the onset of the pandemic, the ONS said in its note.
