MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (Reuters) – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced his withdrawal from the Republican nomination in a video posted on Sunday to X, formerly Twitter, saying he will support Donald Trump.

Sensed a few months ago as being the main opponent of the former American president, Ron DeSantis, 45, was sometimes given the winner against Donald Trump for the Republican nomination in certain opinion polls in early 2023.

“It is clear that a majority of voters in the Republican primary want to give Donald Trump a second chance,” Ron DeSantis said in a video published on X.

“He has my support because we cannot return to the old Republican guard of yesteryear: a repackaged form of reheated corporatism that Nikki Haley represents,” added the Florida governor.

The withdrawal of the governor of Florida leaves the way clear for a duel between Donald Trump, favorite in the polls, and his former United States ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, to face the current tenant of the White House Joe Biden during of the American presidential election in November.

Campaigning in New Hampshire before Tuesday’s vote for the Republican primary, Nikki Haley provoked applause from the crowd when she announced the withdrawal of Ron DeSantis.

“For now, I leave you with this: May the best woman win,” the former South Carolina governor said.
