United States: Americans in the streets to defend the right to abortion

This Saturday, May 14, tens of thousands of Americans demonstrated in the United States to defend the right to abortion, while the Supreme Court threatens to reverse a decision dating back five decades in the country.

No less than 450 processions were deployed in Washington, New York, Chicago, Austin and even Los Angeles. According to AFP information, those present in the crowd held pink signs reading “Hands off our bodies”, “The Supreme Court wants to kill women”, “Make the Court abort” and a large banner “Our bodies, our abortions” was placed in front of the procession. A capital mobilization in the United States, while the Supreme Court could well overturn the 1973 decision, which legalized the right to abortion in the country.

The Democrats, who do not have a majority in the Senate, are trying to make their voices heard, but a vote organized this Wednesday to guarantee access to abortion failed.

If the Supreme Court were to overturn the case law founding the right to abortion, each American state would be free to prohibit or authorize it as it sees fit. Twenty conservative states have already promised to make it illegal, some even in cases of rape or incest.
