United States: Deterioration in household morale in May, according to the University of Michigan survey


PARIS (Reuters) – American household morale deteriorated in May but less markedly than initially estimated, the final results of the monthly survey from the University of Michigan showed on Friday.

Its confidence index stood at 69.1 after an initial estimate of 67.4 while economists polled by Reuters anticipated a figure of 67.5. The index stood at 77.2 in April.

In May, one-year inflation forecasts stood at 3.3% and five-year inflation forecasts at 3.0% compared to initial estimates of 3.5% and 3.1%. The April figures were 3.0% and 3.2% respectively.

On Wall Street, the indices accelerated their gains after the publication of this statistic, allowing the Dow Jones to advance by 0.13%, the Standard & Poor’s 500 to advance by 0.44% and the Nasdaq to rise by 0.58 %.
