United States: he drugs his father to steal 300,000 euros in cryptocurrency

A 25-year-old young man from the state of Maryland, United States, drugged his father in order to steal the equivalent of 300,000 euros in cryptocurrency.

In 2018, Liam Ghershony advised his father to invest in a virtual currency. The father and son had then quickly succeeded in making a fortune by transforming 100,000 dollars (more than 87,000 euros) into more than 350,000 dollars (about 300,000 euros).

They had then decided to take advantage of this great added value by sharing the gains in a common account. But the young man, destabilized by this change of life, gradually sank into drugs, explains the Washington Post.

Liam Ghershony then began to have paranoid tendencies, accentuated by the collapse of the price of Bitcoin. He kept insisting with his father to sell the virtual currency, to no avail. As a prevention, the latter has set up double security on the account containing the cryptocurrency.

At the same time, Liam had started taking benzodiazepines, a powerful antidepressant that can cause drowsiness in high doses. In doing so, the young man had the idea of pouring some into his father’s tea, so that he could take control of the shared account. Except that the dose used, higher than expected, quickly took effect.

Father found lying on the ground, unconscious

Once his father was asleep, Liam Ghershony stole his phone in order to pass the double security set up. Thus, he was able to steal more than 400,000 dollars (nearly 350,000 euros) in order to pay them into his personal account. Always concerned about the price of Bitcoin, Liam quickly converted all this money into another cryptocurrency: Ethereum.

Arrived at the end of his plan, he left his father on the spot assuming that he would wake up, without being aware that the dose ingested was potentially fatal. After several days without news of the unfortunate, Liam Ghershony warned the emergency services. They found the man on the ground, unconscious. When he woke up, he indicated that he was above all worried about his son.

Arrested, Liam Ghershony pleaded guilty to assault, and spent 125 days in prison. He escaped a heavier sentence thanks to his clean criminal record and by agreeing to go to rehab for two months. He is still followed today, and recently found a job in a restaurant.
