CHICAGO (Reuters) – A shooting killed six people and injured several others during a U.S. National Day parade in a Chicago suburb on Monday, local authorities said.

Authorities announced at a press conference that six people had been killed and more than 20 others had been taken to hospital, adding that a gun had been found at the scene of the incident.

The suspect, believed to be a white male in his 20s and allegedly firing into the crowd from the rooftop of a building, was still wanted by law enforcement.

“Jill and I are shocked by the senseless violence that still plagues Americans on this Independence Day,” US President Joe Biden said in a statement.

“I have spoken to Governor (JB) Pritzker and Mayor (Nancy) Rotering and offered them the full support of the federal government to help their communities. I have also reinforced law enforcement personnel federal authorities to help locate the fugitive,” he added.

According to hospital spokesman Jim Anthony, 31 people were injured in the incident.

“The majority of them suffered gunshot wounds. The others were injured in the chaos following the shooting,” said Jim Anthony.
