United States: Two dead after the earthquake of magnitude 6.4 off California

RIO DELL, Calif. (Reuters) – A powerful 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck off northern California on Tuesday, a few miles off the coast, causing power outages and damage.

At least 11 people were injured and two others died from “medical emergencies” that occurred during or shortly after the quake, according to the Humbolt County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the USGS, the quake was recorded at 10:34 GMT and its epicenter, in the Pacific Ocean, was located at a depth of 16.1 kilometers and at a distance of 12 kilometers from the city of Ferndale.

In Ferndale and surrounding Humboldt County, more than 72,000 homes and businesses were without power, according to power grid monitoring website Poweroutageus.com.
