WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Joe Biden’s administration on Friday revised rules dating back only five months to toughen China’s access to American chips planned for artificial intelligence (AI).

The Commerce Department said the new rules, effective April 4, made clarifications and corrections to the framework put in place last October.

The United States seeks to halt shipments to China of AI semiconductors designed by Nvidia and other groups as part of a series of measures intended to prevent Beijing from receiving cutting-edge American technologies who could strengthen his army.
