Unity spent a head at GDC 2023 to showcase the integration of content-generating AI into its engine.

For this, the company has deployed an intriguing teaser that textually involves a female character… and flying alien mushrooms?

DALL-E/Midjourney for video games?

The Unity engine, known for its great openness, therefore hangs up the wagon of the craze around artificial intelligence. This was announced through a text-only teaser, to let the imagination of viewers and the AI behind it run wild.

It is therefore easy to imagine that the AI integrated into Unity will be able to offer 3D content based on one or more requests written by the user. Something to intrigue (and worry?) As to what such a tool could imply in the field of video game development.

The company had this to say regarding the announcement: We want to put AI-powered game development tools in the hands of millions of creators. »

Unity AI enters beta

Unity also took the opportunity to announce that its AI is entering a beta phase through an Insider program. Interested parties can therefore register today by following the link cited in the source below to have a chance to test the tool for themselves.

The window for its release in version 1.0 has of course not been shared, but Unity clarifies that ” Soon, developers will be able to create amazing, real-time 3D content much faster and deliver those experiences to billions of users around the world. “.

Interviewed by ReutersUnity CEO John Riccitello said a bit more about the capabilities of this AI: Throughout the history of video games, dialogue has been written by someone. Today, with generative AI, you can give those characters motivation, personality, and purpose, and then generate dialogue that doesn’t need to be written. »

What potentially greatly upset the way of creating a video game, if such a tool were to be used in a widespread way. And given the enthusiasm around similar AIs like DALL-E or Midjourney, we bet that success will be there. For better and for worse ?
