Unity to lay off nearly 2,000 people

Unity announces the implementation of a job cuts plan which will affect 25% of its employees.

The creator of the Unity search engine had a particularly complicated year in 2023, to the point that last November, the public heard about a potential layoff plan. A plan which is becoming reality at the start of the year, with the announcement of numerous layoffs to come within the Californian company.

Nearly 1,800 people soon to be made redundant

Things are becoming clearer within Unity. According to a document filed by the American firm and an internal memo to which it had access Reuters, management plans to lay off 25% of its employees. In total, nearly 1,800 people will lose their jobs.

This job reduction plan will be put in place by the end of March. According to the London press agency, it will affect all teams and activities, and will apply to all geographic areas where Unity is present.

A complicated end to 2023

We are reducing the number of our activities in order to focus on our core business and ensure our long-term success and profitability » CEO Jim Whitehurst explained to his employees at the start of the week.

It must be said that Unity is not going through the best period of its existence. As a reminder, at the start of the 2023 school year, the company announced the introduction of new execution fees, which had been extremely poorly received by the public, to the point of forcing management to backtrack a few days later.

Subsequently, the man who had been at the head of the company since 2014, John Riccitiello, announced in October that he was resigning. Unity wants to reduce its workforce in order to focus on products with the most value for its customers. Its share price rose 5% following the announcement.
