The group with big ears announced its results for the first quarter of 2022 and its streaming service continues its good progress.

While Netflix has lost subscribers for the first time in its history, Disney+ continues to garner subscriptions and is gradually establishing itself as its number one rival.

Significant increase in subscriptions

Disney has indeed published its quarterly results and announced that it has recruited 7.9 million subscribers in the first three months of 2022.

The streaming service now has a total of 137.7 million subscribers to its platform, including the 50 million Indian users of the Disney+ Hotstar offer, more subscribers to watch cricket matches exclusively than for series and films. offered by the American group.

This performance should however be underlined, the analysts having bet before the publication of the results on a growth of around 5 million subscribers.

Another source of satisfaction for Disney, the average revenue per user increased to $6.32 against $6.01 previously, well helped by the general increase in prices operated last year.

A slowdown expected in the coming months

However, Disney’s entry into streaming remains a costly investment and the “Direct to Consumer” branch recorded a loss of $887 million over the quarter. Disney must feed its catalog week after week and these productions are expensive. The entertainment group has already announced that it does not expect to be profitable on this activity before 2024.

We must also expect a slowdown in recruitment from the next quarter, as confirmed by Christine McCarthy, the group’s financial director, and particularly in Eastern Europe, the fault of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

Last point to note: Disney announces that it has lost a billion dollars in revenue following the end of a contract with one of its former partners. Everything suggests that the company is talking about the withdrawal of Marvel series from Netflix, now on Disney + in certain territories and in France on June 29.

Disney+

  • Disney classics in one place
  • Exclusive Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars series
  • A very attractive price

It was highly anticipated and did not disappoint. Disney+ is not a Netflix rival but a complementary offer, geared particularly towards children and more broadly towards the family. The Star universe, meanwhile, remains the poor relation of the platform and will require several years of work to catch up with its competitors.
