Unorthodox: German Netflix production wins eight Emmy nominations

"Unorthodox" premiered in March 2020. The Netflix series is already nominated for eight Emmy Awards.

The German mini-series "Unorthodox" has chances of winning an Emmy – eight times. When this year's nominations were announced on Tuesday (July 28), the four-part Netflix series made it onto the list of nominees in several categories.

The series, which has been available on Netflix since March 26, has been nominated as the "Best Mini Series". In the category she has to prevail against the productions "Little Fires Everywhere", "Mrs. America", "Unbelievable" and "Watchmen". The latter tops the list of most nominees in 2020 with a total of 26 nominations. Leading actress Shira Haas (25), director Maria Schrader (54) and author Anna Winger (50) have special chances for the coveted TV award. Casting, costumes and music received further nominations.

"Unorthodox" is loosely based on the 2012 book of the same name by Deborah Feldman (33). In it Haas plays a young woman from Brooklyn who is growing up in the Hasidic religious community of the Satmar people. It's a life she doesn't want to live. And so one day she freed herself from the strict rules of the community to start a new life in Berlin.
