Unrestricted system – Cyclists caught by train on level crossing: dead

A tragic accident occurred on Monday afternoon in East Tyrol. An Italian cyclist was hit by a train at an open level crossing and killed in the process.

On Monday around 3:40 p.m., a 50-year-old Italian was out and about on his mountain bike in the Lienz district in the Strassen area and wanted to cross an open level crossing there. At the same time, a train was coming from Tassenbach in the direction of Mittewald. “The cyclist drove into the intersection immediately in front of the railcar set, which is secured without barriers but with a traffic light system, and was caught by the train,” reports a police officer.

The Italian suffered fatal injuries in the accident.
