Russian troops have already largely taken control of the Cherson region, but Kyiv is now reporting recaptures. A Russian garrison is said to be surrounded. The Ukrainian army is said to have suffered significantly fewer casualties than it did a few weeks ago.

According to information from Kyiv, more than 1,000 Russian soldiers have been surrounded by Ukrainian forces in the occupied southern Ukrainian region of Cherson. Not far from the Vysokopillya settlement, the Russians found themselves in a “tactical encirclement,” said President Volodymyr Zelensky’s adviser, Oleksiy Arestovych. On Thursday they had unsuccessfully attempted a breakthrough. Arestovych’s statements could not be checked independently. So far, there has been no confirmation from the Russian side.

Some time ago, the Ukrainian army confirmed the capture of the village of Potemkyne. The general staff report spoke of Russian bombing of the place. Wyssokopillja was not mentioned. The Ukrainian army had recently launched several counter-offensives in the Cherson region, which Russian soldiers had largely brought under their control after the start of the war against the neighboring country that began at the end of February. Ukraine also wants to reconquer lost territories with the help of Western weapons.

In Cherson, the population has repeatedly protested against the Russian occupiers in recent months. There were also attacks against pro-Russian administrators installed by Moscow.

Meanwhile, the “Wall Street Journal” reports, citing statements by Zelenskyj, that the Ukrainian army is now recording significantly fewer casualties than a few weeks ago. Selenskyj told the newspaper in an interview that around 30 Ukrainian soldiers are currently being killed every day – in May and June it was between 100 and 200 a day.
