Eternal lover, Etienne Daho has always spoken of this universal theme running through his songs, from his beginnings to his new album.
Iconic singer of the French pop scene, Etienne Daho has the voice, rhythm and emblematic themes and succeeds in renewing itself with each of its productions and tours. In an interview for Madame Figaro, the interpreter of “shoulder tattoo” opened up about his own love life, and about those who inspire him and make him dream.
Etienne Daho “I am an eternal lover”
His new project “Shooting the Stars at Night”is a very personal project that owes its name to two lovers, Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra. “When they fell in love they went to the desert, and they fired their pistols at the stars. I thought that image was so crazy”, confides the singer, who awaits the release of his album in February 2023. His theme? “I’m almost ashamed to say itsmiles Etienne Daho, a love story. Well, anyway, I’m an eternal lover. Until the end, until the day when I will cry out, I believe, I will be in love.” This is a point in common with Jeanne Moreau, with whom he had sung and who had made this confession to him. “We found each other as if we had always known each other, he remembers, Jeanne told me that at her age she was still very much in love and I found it sublime, this youth, the impetuous, fierce side.
All his life, he has therefore only sung and lived for and out of love, and it is difficult to know whether these were autobiographical songs or not. In any case, they have always been part of his work and he has met tons of loving couples, especially mythical ones: “Elli and Jacno, Harry and Dutronc, Birkin and Gainsbourg, they sent me tokens of affection, as if I were part of their family. I will never forget, I was welcomed.” he remembers. He who has never been welcomed by his own father, whom he talks about in “Duel in the Sun”, and whom he can no longer talk about today. Love, in all its forms, is his entire artistic project.
His first love story: a jukebox at Cap Falcon
In a seaside resort, about twenty kilometers from Oran, the young Etienne discovers a jukebox which becomes a starting point in his life, in the grocery store-café run by his grandmother and his aunts. “This jukebox is my first love story, the beginnings of rock, the yé-yé, and immediately the relationship to the disc objecthe explains to Madame Figaro, from two years old I knew exactly which one I wanted to put: they called me “Only You”, because I jabbered the Platters’ song. Already a love story, like what, it can not be invented. From “week-end in Rome” to “like an igloo”, from “Ouverture” to “Hindu hours”, Etienne the romantic pop rock is insatiable and although he remains extremely modest about his own love stories, his arrival in the city of love, Paris, when he was only 8 years old, will seal the rest of his destiny and his career.
