After the departure of series champion Voléro Zürich from the NLA, the path for Aesch-Pfeffingen seemed paved. Four years later, the Basel bidders are still without a championship title.
The relief in the Basel area must have been great when Voléro Zurich announced his departure from the NLA in 2018 and pitched his tents in France. The gap left by the series champion from Zurich seemed made for Sm’Aesch Pfeffingen. The club from the Basel region – without a championship title since it was founded in 2000 – had previously failed in the final against the Zurich star ensemble three times in a row.
But the role of the title favorite should not suit Sm’Aesch. Even four years later, the trophy cabinet is still empty:
2019: In year 1 without the series champion from Zurich, Aesch-Pfeffingen moves into the final as befits its status. With Neuchâtel UC, another untitled opponent is waiting, but Sm’Aesch has to leave the title premiere to the opponent from Neuchâtel.
2020: Sm’Aesch wins the qualification and storms into the semi-finals with a commanding 3-0 win. Because of the corona pandemic, the season is canceled. After all, the Basel bidders win the Supercup in September.
2021: Covid-19 is once again thwarting the dreams of the Basel bidders. After Corona cases in the team, the semi-final series against Düdingen cannot be played to the end with a score of 1: 1. Due to a passage worthy of discussion, the Freiburg women make it into the final – because they won a total of two meager points over two games.
2022: In the final, a well-known opponent is waiting with NUC. Against the Neuchâtel women, who dominated the qualification at will, Sm’Aesch again draws the short straw.
The chance of winning the championship trophy in the future should not increase in the coming years. After the failed adventure in France, Voléro Zurich returned to Switzerland (NLB) in 2020, two years later the return of the Zurich women to the NLA is perfect. The team around the controversial President Stav Jacobi has already underpinned its ambitions this year by winning the cup.
