UNUSUAL on Echo VR: the VR e-sport community is mobilizing to save the game

We told you about it in a previous article, Echo VR, one of the first free-to-play on helmets Metawill no longer be supported from this summerleaving many players in the embarrassment, as the multiplayer game while weightless is damn good.

The disappointment is such thata group called Fight for Echo took the initiative to buy an overhead banner encouraging Mark Zuckerberg not to ‘kill’ their favorite game :

Said message shot for 3 hours near the headquarters of Meta in Menlo Park and was broadcast live, attracting more than 3,000 spectators. Here is what Duncan Carroll, the originator of the movement, said:

This event is a call to Mark Zuckerberg to reverse Boz’s decision to shut down one of the most popular and beloved VR games in history. The community is convinced that Echo VR is not just an electronic sport, but a part of gaming history.

Echo has been a landmark in VR and gaming in general. It was the first popular VR game to really solve the motion problem in VR, and when you put on your headset, you really felt like you were stepping into another world, with its own physics. People talk a lot about “presence” in VR, and that’s what Echo VR has just nailed it.

When you’re in such a space, your brain really believes it’s real and gives it just as much importance, as if it were a physical place, with real people. So when Meta announced he was closing everything, I felt more like he was taking a house away from me than just a game. And I know a lot of other players feel the same way. I have a feeling this is a phenomenon unique to VR and companies like Meta will have to find a better way to handle it in the future.

Echo VR is available for download and playable on Oculus Quest, Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro, Oculus Rift and Rift S headsets until August 1, 2023.
