Up to 65 centimeters of fresh snow – lots of fresh snow in the Alps – train connections interrupted – news

  • During the night on Tuesday it snowed heavily in the Alps – mostly on the Weissfluhjoch in Graubünden with 65 centimeters of fresh snow.
  • Within 24 hours, 51 centimeters of fresh snow were measured in Arosa, 39 centimeters in Bivio and 28 centimeters in Davos.
  • Feared traffic problems in the lowlands did not materialize.

Snow also fell heavily in the Bernese Oberland: 35 centimeters were measured in Kandersteg and 25 centimeters in Adelboden, as reported by SRF Meteo.

During the course of Tuesday, the snowfall temporarily decreases and increases again in the evening. By tomorrow, Wednesday evening, another 40 to 80 centimeters of fresh snow are possible above 1000 meters, as SRF Meteo further predicted.

Public transport was interrupted on various occasions due to the snowfall, such as the railway line between Dieni and Andermatt in the canton of Uri and the Flumserberge cable car in the canton of St. Gallen. The roadway of the A2 motorway between Amsteg and Göschenen in the canton of Uri was snow-covered.

The weather in Switzerland will remain turbulent until Wednesday, with hurricane gusts and lots of fresh snow in the mountains and some storm gusts in the lowlands. The avalanche danger is already “great” in some areas and will continue to increase in many places by Wednesday.

Power failure

The power went out in parts of Surselva on Tuesday. The communities of Laax, Falera, Sagogn, Schluein and Valendas were without electricity for around 20 minutes shortly before noon. The snow had caused a short circuit in the power grid. The power outage affected 7,200 customers of the energy company Repower, as announced.
