The start of the best-of-3 series of the pre-playoffs is next Friday, March 18, with the better-ranked teams initially enjoying home advantage. Game 2 then follows 2 days later on Sunday, March 20th, a possible “Belle” would take place on Tuesday, March 22nd.
Lausanne (7th) – Ambri-Piotta (10th): The duel of the teams of the moment
- Seventh against tenth: What actually sounds like a duel between two “backbenchers” is in fact a rencontre between the two teams in the league with the best form. The Vaudois have won 7 of the last 8 games, the Leventine the last 6.
- Of the 4 direct duels, 3 ended in a home win. Lausanne was only able to celebrate away from home in the last game. Coach John Fust’s team won 3 of the 4 games.
- While the defenses were comparable over the season, Ambris’ offense is falling. Inti Pestoni & Co. scored 24 fewer goals – even though they still had 1 more game to play. Only the SCL Tigers and Ajoie were weaker.
- Fun fact: The home team scored 3 goals in all 4 direct duels.
- The winner in the playoff quarterfinals is Fribourg-Gottéron, which finished the qualification in 2nd place.
Geneva-Servette (8th) – Lugano (9th): Will Lugano find the competitive mode again?
- Despite winning in the last round, Geneva just missed out on direct qualification for the playoff quarter-finals. For Lugano, on the other hand, it has long been clear that things will continue in the pre-playoffs – so can the Ticino team step up a gear again?
- Lugano urgently needs to find a recipe against the weakness away from home, otherwise the out against Servette is inevitable: the Ticino team lost all of their last 5 appearances abroad; Geneva has home advantage in the best-of-3 series.
- 3 of the 4 season duels took place in the old year. After that, it took almost 4 months until the last rencontre in early March, which Geneva won 3-2 at home.
- Geneva and Lugano didn’t take much from each other this season: Lugano won the 1st and 3rd game (5:3, 3:0), Geneva the 2nd and 4th (4:1, 3:2).
- Penalties are forbidden in this duel: Geneva (22.06%) and Lugano (20.69%) were number 1 and 4 in the league in the power play in the regular season.
- The winner of the series will play in the playoffs against the qualifier and champion EV Zug.
Playoffs: “Underdogs” Rapperswil and Biel in the top 6
After the end of the regular season, 2 playoff quarterfinals are already known. At the last minute and thanks to a 2:1 away win a.e.t. in Zug, the ZSC Lions moved up to third place. This gives them a duel with Biel. Certainly not a bad place for Zurich, who won 3 of the 4 direct duels against the Seelanders this year. In general, the “lions” can tackle the playoffs with a good feeling, having won in Zug for the 5th time in the last 6 games.
At Obersee, everyone is eagerly awaiting the playoff quarterfinals against HC Davos. The season so far promises a close affiche. Although the fifth-placed Grisons were able to win 3 of the 5 duels, the goal difference of 13:12 speaks volumes. The start of the playoff quarterfinals is on Friday, March 25th.
