Update: Amazon AppStore now also runs on Android 12

At the beginning of December we reported that the Amazon AppStore was not working on Android 12. The reason was Amazon’s digital rights management, which would have had to be adjusted before the Google operating system was updated. As Amazon told Engadget, the app store is working again.

  • Amazon AppStore works again on Android 12
  • The shipping giant announced this to Engadget
  • Problems arose due to the digital rights management of the app store

With the Amazon AppStore you can install an alternative app store on Android. This means that you are no longer dependent on the almost 3.5 million apps in the Google directory, but can get additional software from other sources on your mobile phone. The problem, however, was that Amazon made a mistake when adapting to Android 12. For this reason, the app store on Android 12 could not be used for several weeks.

As Amazon has now announced to Endgadget, the app library is available again under Android 12. This is particularly relevant for the update of Amazon’s own Fire tablets to the new Google operating system. You can find out how to install the Google Play Store on your Fire tablet the other way around in the linked title.

Original article

According to information from the Android forums Slashdot and Liliputing, readers complain about Amazon! The apps that were downloaded from the shipping giant’s store no longer work on Android 12. Since the update to the new operating system, they can no longer be started or used. Some users even report that all of their downloads no longer appear in the app store’s library.

The reason for this is Amazon’s DRM, i.e. the digital rights management. This conflicts with Android 12 and thus withdraws the usage rights of all apps. As a result, users with the new operating system have no access to Amazon’s applications, no matter how hard they try. The whole thing is particularly annoying when you rely on certain apps from the Amazon Appstore.

What is the Amazon Appstore?

The Amazon Appstore is an alternative source for apps on Android. Unlike the Google Play Store, it is not preinstalled on smartphones, but must first be installed as an APK on the mobile phone. If you now compare the selection of apps, it turns out that the Google Play Store with almost 2.56 million apps offers almost five times as many apps as the competitor from Amazon with almost 460,000 applications. Since the Google Play Services are not available, there are no corresponding apps.

In return, the Appstore has the advantage that it can be used independently of Google. So if you prefer to use your apps without being connected to the mega-corporation, the Amazon store is definitely worth a recommendation – at least if you use Android 11.

Amazon is addressing the problem

Now that Android 12 has officially been released for a little over a month, Amazon is addressing the problem. The shipping giant has spoken out and is investigating the problem. The company confirms there are problems with the app store. However, these only affect smartphones – the Fire tablets and the Amazon Fire TV Stick are not affected.

If you want to test the new Android 12 but are actively using the Amazon Appstore, then you’d better wait a little longer. As soon as the problem is resolved, you will find out about it on NextPit.
