Update Chromecast: How to install firmware updates

HOW DO I TRANSFER CONTENT FROM MY MOBILE DEVICE TO…

Software updates for Google’s Chromecast devices are usually distributed automatically and do not have to be done manually. It’s still possible with a little trick. We’ll show you how it works.

  • Chromecasts are usually updated automatically, so you don’t have to do anything else.
  • But you can also force the software update manually if there are problems with it.
  • For this you need a Windows PC or a Mac and a short PowerShell or Terminal command.

As with many modern streaming sticks, Chromecast devices are updated automatically in the vast majority of cases, so that you as the user do not have to intervene. But sometimes updates are not triggered immediately for various reasons. If you are affected, you can force the update with a short command. We’ll show you how.

Before trying to force a software update on the Chromecast, you need to make sure it’s working properly and the LED isn’t flashing orange. Only then should you try to force an update.

In order to be able to force the update, you must first find out the IP address of your Chromecast in the network.

Now you have found out the IP address of the Chromecast. We will now show you how you can initiate the update. For this you need one of these two commands:

Windows: Invoke-WebRequest -Method Post -ContentType “application/json” -Body ‘”params”: “ota foreground”‘ -Uri “http://IP-ADDRESS:8008/setup/reboot” -Verbose -UserAgent “curl”

macOS: curl -X POST -H “Content-Type: application/json” -d ‘”params”: “ota foreground”‘ http://IP-ADDRESS:8008/setup/reboot -v

You need the command that corresponds to your operating system. Replace the “IP ADDRESS” with your IP address found in the Chromecast app.
