  • Amazon is providing selected Fire TV devices with an update. It brings Matter Casting to the streaming devices.
  • This allows you to play content from your phone on the Fire TV Stick.
  • The function is similar to Apple’s Airplay or Google’s Chromecast.

Amazon is currently rolling out an update for selected Fire TV devices. After this, the mail order company’s sticks and TVs will support the Matter Casting streaming protocol. This is a new standard that allows you to select content on your smartphone and play it on the Fire TV Stick. In the meantime, you can continue to use the smartphone and use it to check emails or surf the web.

To transfer content, all you have to do is select it on your phone. Then tap the casting symbol and select the corresponding Fire TV device. The technology is reminiscent of Apple AirPlay and Google Chromecast. In comparison, however, there is still one disadvantage: For now, it only works with a few apps. At the start, you can only cast content from the Prime Video app to the Fire TV Stick. Over the course of the year, other apps will also support Matter Casting – such as the ZDF app.

Play content from your phone on your TV

Despite these limitations, the rollout of the feature is a big step for Amazon. Until now, the Fire TV Stick has only offered limited compatibility with mobile phones compared to the competition. You can use the “Duplicate” function to mirror your phone’s screen on the Fire TV Stick. However, since Amazon uses the Miracast standard for this, this does not work with iPhones or Google Pixel phones, as they do not support Miracast. There were also a few casting solutions, but these were limited to an app such as YouTube.

If Matter Casting is currently too limited for you, you can use a trick to upgrade Chromecast and AirPlay to your Fire TV Stick.

Amazon does not reveal in the press release which Fire TV devices are compatible. When asked, we were told that Matter Casting is available for most Fire TVs with FireOS 7 or higher. These include the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd generation), the Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd generation), the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (1st generation), the Fire TV Stick (3rd generation), the Fire TV Stick Lite and the Fire TV Cube (3rd generation) as well as the Fire TV Cube (2nd generation).
