The unloved Big Picture interface of Steam has finally received a fresh coat of paint, very typical color… Steam Deck !

A welcome redesign of the interface for a mode almost completely ignored by users, both because of its aesthetics and its hitherto wobbly ergonomics. This “new” design was rolled out alongside a major client update.

In order to harmonize its ecosystem, which now includes the very pleasant Steam Deck, Valve has finally looked into the long-neglected Big Picture mode. Those who already have the famous PC/console hybrid from Gabe Newell’s company or who have taken a look at its interface will find themselves on familiar ground.

Big Picture thus gains greatly in ergonomics. Thus, it launches us from the start on the games recently opened instead of adding an additional manipulation by making us choose in which category of Steam we go. This maneuver was not without risk, as the old version could sometimes be unstable.

Navigation is much more pleasant, with tabs much better laid out and easily accessible via the menu. It also gains in fluidity, provided you do not have a machine that is too old. The most nostalgic can always go back to the old version by adding the “-oldbigpicture” command line in the Steam settings.

Valve sees the Big Picture in the long term

However, this early redesign of the Big Picture interface is not without flaws. Many users have indeed reported problems with instability, excessive CPU usage, poorly responding controls, and many other disappointments. This change therefore remains very significant compared to the old version left fallow, but still needs to be refined by Valve.

Apart from this Big Picture facelift, the latest Steam update brought a significant batch of changes and fixes. Much of this input focuses on the various controllers used for navigating the platform, which now supports joy-cons and the Switch Pro controller, among other things.

Good news also for those with a large library or looking for the best download speed: loading the games list should be greatly improved, and changing the download region will no longer require restarting the Steam client. .

Steam

  • An essential service for any PC gamer
  • A pleasant social network side
  • Voice chat that does the job

Steam is unquestionably one of the must-have software for any PC gamer. A leader in the field of the sale of dematerialized games, the Valve platform also allows its users to take advantage of features that have become inherent in the practice of online video games, including voice and text chat. In other words, Steam allows everything to be combined in one software: the social aspect and communication between friends, but also the direct proxy of the games. An all-in-one that has been successful at Valve for almost a decade.
