“Urban Purifier” – Audi now sucks the air free of particles

E-cars also leave particulate matter in the environment. Tire wear, brakes, Stromer are not completely emission-free even locally. However, Audi has now developed a system that extracts these particles from the air again.

And not just their own: In the future, Audi vehicles could use a filter system to free their ambient air from fine dust from other vehicles. The Ingolstadt-based company and the supplier Mann + Hummel presented the technology called “Urban Purifier” – roughly translated: city cleaner – at an environmental trade fair in London. It is a filter mounted behind the radiator grille that either removes the fine dust particles present in the wind absorbs or actively sucks in the ambient air. The latter is conceivable, for example, with electric vehicles during the charging process. According to Audi, initial tests of the system on board an electric test vehicle were successful. The filter therefore has no effect on the function and operation of the car, not even in summer or when charging quickly. The cleaning performance is sufficient to completely filter the particles from the test vehicle from the air.Particulate matter is one of the most dangerous types of pollutants in urban air. 85 percent of the particulate matter in road traffic is caused by brake, tire or road abrasion, regardless of the vehicle’s drive type. There is no information about when Audi technology will be offered to customers.
