Sexism in Politics: It Really Is That Bad

Ursula von der Leyen is angry that women in politics still struggle with open sexism.

After “Sofagate” Ursula von der Leyen speaks clearly about how much sexism she herself has to endure as a top politician.

At first glance, it was only about a seat, but in truth it was so much more: Ursula von der Leyen is still upset about the way she was treated during an official visit to Turkey. What happened? During my meeting with President Recep Erdogan, EU Council President Charles Michel was allowed to take a seat next to him on a chair – but there was no space for von der Leyen. After a short, confused pause, she finally had to take a seat on a sofa that was further away from the two men.

“Because I am a woman”

It was not only obvious to Ursula von der Leyen herself that it was primarily about her gender – and the clear message that state politics are supposedly more of a men’s business. “I cannot find an explanation for my treatment in the European treaties. Therefore, I have to conclude that I was treated this way because I am a woman,” said von der Leyen. See in the video what she is now calling for herself and other politicians.
