US approves sale of $100 million worth of missile equipment to Taiwan


WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States has approved a possible $100 million sale to Taiwan of equipment and services to enable the island to “maintain and improve” its Patriot missile defense system, the U.S. Department said on Monday. of Defense.

A Pentagon agency said in a statement that it had notified Congress to certify the sale, requested by the de facto Embassy of Taiwan Washington and authorized by the US State Department.

Raytheon Technologies and Lockheed Martin would be the main contractors, she said.

Taiwan’s defense minister previously said the decision to acquire new Patriot missiles was made during a meeting with officials from former US President Donald Trump’s administration in 2019.
