BEIJING (Reuters) – China’s Defense Ministry on Monday justified Beijing’s decision to drop military talks with the United States in response to the visit to Taiwan by U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, warning that Washington should face “serious consequences”.

The visit to Taipei last week by Nancy Pelosi, an official of the Democratic Party from which US President Joe Biden comes, angered China, which considers Taiwan a renegade province and does not rule out using force to bring her back to her bosom.

Beijing has fired ballistic missiles and military maneuvers near Taiwan, also cutting some lines of dialogue with Washington.

“The current tense situation in the Taiwan Strait is entirely provoked and created by the US side on its own initiative, and the US side should bear full responsibility and serious consequences for this,” the ministry spokesperson said. of the defense.

“Communication requires sincerity,” Wu Qian added in an online message, as Beijing canceled formal talks scheduled for Friday with US military officials to discuss defense issues.

The Pentagon, the US State Department and the White House have denounced this decision by China, saying they see it as an irresponsible disproportionate reaction.
