US box office: Across the Spider-Verse biggest start of the year?

It would seem that the second part of the adventures of Miles Morales and his other Spider-Men and Spider-Women companions is on the way to becoming the biggest start of the year: in any case, its first day, it is. !

Successful first day of exploitation for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in the United States: Friday, the film screened in 4,313 theaters took in $51.7 million at the US box office. As reported by Deadline, this is the biggest opening day of 2023 so far after the $48.1 million for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and the $31.7 million for Super Mario Bros. the Movie. During its previews already, which took place Thursday in the United States, the film had reached the sum of 17.35 million dollars in revenue.

This opening day now ranks as the third best opening day in history for a Spider-Man movie, behind Spider-Man: No Way Home ($121.9 million) and Spider-Man 3 by Sam Raimi ($59.8 million). The figures for this first day of exploitation are also the third highest for an animated film, after The Incredibles 2 (71.2 million dollars) and Finding Dory (54.7 million dollars), in addition to be the best of all time for Sony Pictures Animation.

The original 2018 film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, opened with $35 million in revenue in the United States, before earning $190 million at the global box office. This sequel, however, benefits from the reputation of this first opus adored by the public and the critics and should more than triple the figures of its predecessor.

The super-heroic animated adventure thus exceeds its own projections which estimated its start (entire weekend) at around 80 million dollars: at this rate, the new estimates would be rather around 113 million dollars until this Sunday. To be continued.
