US business group says members see limited impact from Taiwan-China tensions

AmCham Taiwan said 126 of its 529 members responded to the survey from Aug. 8-17. Seventy-seven percent said their businesses had not been significantly impacted, while 17% said they had experienced disruptions, including increased shipping or insurance costs, or delays in the supply chain.

Nearly half of that 17% said the disruption stemmed from “policy changes or other expressions of concern from their offshore headquarters”, it added in a statement.

Longer term, 46% of companies surveyed expect increased military activity this year and next to affect their operations, while the rest are unsure or do not expect to be affected , the group said.

Asked about the specific “spectrum of threats”, the companies listed the main concerns as general tension, including disinformation campaigns, constraints or “barriers on the outskirts of Taiwan, and sanctions, travel bans, boycotts and embargoes against products and people from Taiwan,” he added.

On a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being not at all concerned and 5 being very concerned, the average level of concern among respondents about taking serious action against Taiwan over the next 24 months was 2.8, said the group.

AmCham Taiwan President Andrew Wylegala said the organization has called for an ambitious program to accelerate economic cooperation with Taiwan through the 21st Century Trade Initiative – a new framework for trade negotiations between Taiwan and Taiwan. the United States – and eventually a bilateral trade agreement.
