US Democrat Nancy Pelosi was the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives. Now she resigned in an emotional speech.

Following the midterm elections held in the United States, US politician Nancy Pelosi (82) decided not to stand for election and consequently relinquish leadership of the Democratic Party in the Congress Chamber. For her, it was “time for a new generation to lead the Democratic Group, which I respect so much,” announced the 82-year-old in an emotional speech, at which she also received applause from some Republicans. However, Pelosi will continue to serve as an MP.

In the midterm elections, the Democrats lost their majority in the House of Representatives to the Republicans, as expected. Pelosi, who ranked third in the state ranking behind US President Joe Biden (79) and Vice President Kamala Harris (58) as its chair, was the first woman to assume the office in 2007.
