The US Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against the state of Texas over a controversial electoral reform. The government believes that the recently passed law unfairly restricts the right to vote.
The lawsuit filed with a court in San Antonio on Thursday is directed against the electoral law changes that came into force in September, which include a ban on so-called drive-in voting – that is, voting from the car.
Limitation of postal voting options
The law threatened voters’ rights by restricting access to those who needed help with voting, the Justice Department said. The changes provide for a limitation of postal voting options and shorter opening times for polling stations.
The US Democrats see the law as an attempt to make voting more difficult for minorities such as African Americans – and thus tends to keep Democratic voters away from the polls.
Since the presidential election last year, in which the Democrat Joe Biden (78) prevailed against the Republican incumbent Donald Trump (75), the Republicans have been driving changes in the electoral law in the states they govern. They justify this with the alleged susceptibility to fraud of the previous electoral legislation. (AFP)
