CAIRO (Reuters) – The U.S. military has dispatched a ship to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, U.S. Central Command (Centcom) said on Sunday, days after President Joe Biden announced the construction of a port temporary on the Mediterranean coast the Palestinian enclave.

The ship left its base “less than 36 hours after President Biden announced that the United States would provide humanitarian aid to Gaza by sea,” Centcom said in a statement.

The boat “transports the first equipment necessary for the construction of a temporary port in order to transport essential humanitarian equipment”.

Joe Biden’s announcement Thursday during his State of the Union speech comes as the UN warns that famine threatens the 2.3 million Gazans, most of whom have been displaced by the fighting, while Israeli bombings have ravaged the enclave and its infrastructure.
